Some Win32 functions allow you to pass any type of object to them. One example is the set of functions dealing with thread local storage. These functions allow you to allocate a storage slot, store something in it (an object, an array, or anything else), and then reference it later. Another example is a callback function that allows you to pass any type of object with the callback. One potential problem when passing objects to unmanaged code is that .NET may attempt to garbage collect the object if it thinks there are no active references to it. You wouldn t want garbage collection to occur on an object that you still need. If the only references to the object are in unmanaged code, the garbage collector won t know about them. Therefore, when passing a managed handle to unmanaged code, you must do something to prevent garbage collection. You can do this by wrapping the managed object in a GCHandle and then passing that handle to unmanaged code. The basic steps to use a GCHandle are as follows: 1. Allocate the GCHandle using the static Alloc method. 2. Pass the GCHandle to unmanaged code and use it as needed. 3. Free the GCHandle using the Free method when you are finished with it. By wrapping an object in a GCHandle, you prevent garbage collection of that object until you call the Free method. This allows you to pass the managed object to unmanaged code without the worry of garbage collection during the unmanaged call. If you forget to free a GCHandle using the Free method, it will never be garbage collected and that could eventually lead to memory-related performance problems.
